A new Edinburgh Napier University nursing graduate says she was inspired by the care she received in hospital.
Hina Khokhar joined fellow classmates from ENU’s BN Adult Nursing programme, crossing the stage to collect her degree at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.
It was a double celebration for the 44-year-old, who is originally from Karachi in Pakistan, as her graduation also fell on her daughter’s 21st birthday.
Hina’s connection to Edinburgh Napier is deepened by the fact her husband, Dr Aamir Khokhar, is an engineering lecturer at the University.
Following her graduation, Hina said: “Twenty-one years ago, I could never have imagined that I would one day reach this milestone.
“As a mother of three children and a member of the NHS staff bank, balancing academic responsibilities with professional commitments and family life has been challenging.
“There were many moments of uncertainty, exhaustion and difficulty, but each challenge strengthened my determination to continue and achieve my goal.
“I am also deeply grateful to my husband. His support, alongside that of my children and family, has been an invaluable part of this journey.
“I feel incredibly proud and grateful to have reached this milestone, and I look forward to beginning the next chapter of my professional journey in nursing.”
Hina was encouraged to begin her nursing journey after a hospital stay, during which she experienced inspiring care.
She added: “I was looked after so well by the people who worked there. I wanted to give something back – to give the same level of care that they gave me.
“I came to this country with no English in my twenties, so it feels like a big achievement to be here today.
“It is really fitting that it has fallen on my daughter’s 21st birthday.”
