Edinburgh Napier University has been named the top university in Scotland for environmental sustainability and ethics for the second consecutive year, according to the 2022 People and Planet University League.

People and Planet is the only independent league table of UK universities which focuses on environmental and ethical performance. It ranks institutions across a number of credentials, including carbon reduction, energy sources, waste and recycling, and workers' rights.

Edinburgh Napier achieved a 2:1 ranking and topped the table in Scotland, while receiving an overall UK placing of 37th, up six from last year.

The University scored particularly highly under the education for sustainable development category and saw its biggest increases within workers’ rights. That was put down to ENU gaining Living Wage Scotland accreditation within the 2021/22 academic year.

Jamie Pearson, Environmental Sustainability Manager at Edinburgh Napier, said: “We are incredibly proud of the work and leadership of our community that has been recognised within the 2022 University League audit.

“An array of students, staff and partners have led and enabled key areas of improvement in our work, including the development of new academic modules, the publication of an updated Ethical Investment Policy and gaining Living Wage Scotland accreditation.

“We will continue our environmental sustainability journey at Edinburgh Napier to meet the significant commitments embedded within our University Strategy.”

The People & Planet University League audits ethical and environmental performance by analysing publicly available information, such as the data on Edinburgh Napier University’s environmental hub.
