The innovative technology driving us towards a sustainable future has taken centre stage at the annual showcase of Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment (SCEBE).An exhibition model of a bamboo timber gridshell design

With the title of Green Horizons: Towards Sustainable Futures, the 2025 edition of the SCEBE exhibition is being held at ENU’s Merchiston Campus, with members of the public and schools invited to attend today and tomorrow.

Amid the climate crisis, it will focus on ways research and innovation can play a major role in safeguarding the future of our planet, by finding sustainable ways of living and conserving precious resources.

Among the highlights of the exhibition are work into the future of energy-efficient buildings, transport, timber and renewable energy. There will be opportunities to take a closer look at ENU work into seaweed cellulose and environmentally friendly construction methods.

Organiser Dr John McDougall, Reader in Geotechnical Engineering, said: “This is the fourth exhibition we've done, and they've proved increasingly popular with audiences so far, so this year we’ve extended the opening hours.

“Our theme of Green Horizons also meshes well with the Edinburgh Science Festival, which this year was based around One Planet.

“We work closely with the Science Festival: they have helped to train our staff who’ll be on the stands in how best to talk to younger people and share their research in the most inspiring way possible.”

Green Horizons runs at ENU’s Merchiston campus between 10am-6pm on Wednesday 14 May, with visits from local schools planned on Thursday 15 May.
