The University has signed up to support the club for two years.
The deal will run until spring 2018 and will see Edinburgh Napier University as the main sponsor on the club’s new season kit.
The partnership will also provide an opportunity for the University to strengthen its cricket offering to students including winter coaching from the club, the provision of training facilities for various Edinburgh Napier student sports, discounted membership to the club for students and support in developing a female cricket team.
The club will also offer committee and leadership roles to students and promote student recruitment and open day events on behalf of the University.
The agreement is a welcome addition to the University’s sponsorship portfolio of sport which already includes the Edinburgh Rugby and Hong Kong Scottish rugby teams and a partnership with the BT Sport Scottish Rugby, Edinburgh.
Dr Susan Brown, the University's Head of Sport, Exercise and Health Science, said: "The partnership with Watsonian Cricket Club is an exciting project to add to our growing list of sport collaborations. We are confident it will benefit our students in many ways including coaching support and enhanced training facilities. Having access to cricket players will also provide a new dimension to our research projects.
“Community engagement is also a key focus across our work with our partners and we have had a number of successful rugby events to date. We look forward to working with our local neighbour’s on cricket initiatives.”
Keith Flannigan, President of Watsonian Cricket Club, said “The Club is delighted to announce a new partnership with our near neighbours on Colinton Road, Edinburgh Napier University, who will be the club’s principal sponsor for an initial period of two years.
"We look forward to a fruitful relationship over the sponsorship period, which will both increase the opportunities for all students to participate in cricket and support other projects of benefit to the sports science department. The University will feature prominently on the Club’s playing kit."
Watsonian Cricket Club was formed in 1875 and has an enviable reputation throughout the game, both in Scotland and abroad. The Club is based at Myreside, with another ground at nearby Craiglockhart (formerly the home of Edinburgh University cricket), and currently fields four senior XIs and a Women’s XI.
