MSP Visit December 2023

The Minister for Public Health and Women's Health, Jenni Minto visited the Centre for Cardiovascular Health this month.

Taking action to combat cardiovascular disease

About us

The Centre for Cardiovascular Health is a multidisciplinary research and education centre committed to improving global cardiovascular health. Our approach focuses on how to close the evidence practice gap through our strong focus on patient involvement and implementation science.

Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death globally. In Scotland alone it affects 15% of the population, and costs the National Health Service £800m per year. Established in 2021, the Cardiovascular Health Centre aims to develop a unique combination of ‘bench to bedside and beyond’ research, focused on innovative solutions to improving patient-centred cardiovascular health. We have particular focus on the patient and working alongside healthcare practitioners based in hospitals and community healthcare centres.

Our approach

We understand that preventing and treating cardiovascular disease is complicated. Cardiovascular disease is caused by a mixture of our individual health, the environment that we live in and our lifestyle behaviours, such as what we eat and how much physical activity we do.

We know that taking action to combat cardiovascular disease requires us to think about how preventative lifestyle options such as healthy diet and being physically active are promoted, and how people are supported to manage disease once they have had a diagnosis. Our research themes aim to address individual health, familial and social networks, community and system barriers, and inform policy and guidelines.

Our teaching

We focus on delivering excellent teaching informed by our research, so that the next generation of students, researchers and practitioners will think differently about tackling cardiovascular disease. We contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate courses and have a vibrant PhD community. We also have a suite of continuing professional development courses for existing health professionals.
