Edinburgh Napier University is at the forefront of translational research in cardiovascular and cancer rehabilitation. Cardiotoxicity after cancer treatment has emerged as a significant, growing challenge in the UK, described as a “hidden” crisis. We are uniquely placed to meet this challenge through our pioneering translation of exercise science into cancer and cardiovascular healthcare, across both policy and practice. Our work has influenced international clinical guidelines, including those of the World Health Organisation (WHO), and led to the creation of the UK’s first community-based exercise programme, which was the foundation for Macmillan Cancer Support’s MoveMore initiative. Our research and NHS collaborations have established the first specialist Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) clinic in Scotland. The [EN]ABLE Active Health Hub will support rapid translation of research into NHS practice by generating evidence to support the implementation of research innovations in primary healthcare, focusing on exercise interventions for cancer and cardiac patients. It will help to join up and consolidate existing assets to support the transformation of Scotland’s community healthcare provision to deliver for patients, healthcare staff, and those who are pushing the boundaries towards a better, healthier future for all. The Hub’s work will be transformative for people in recovery from, and living with health conditions, helping them to be better informed and feel in control and enabled to live their best life with confidence.
The AquaLab at Edinburgh Napier University is a specialised facility within the School of Applied Sciences designed for marine research, behavioural studies, and physiological experiments. As our only purpose-built aquatic research facility, it has housed a plethora of marine and freshwater experiments over the last decade. High use now requires us to renovate and refurbish the lab in order to support our leading marine research for Scotland and to enable expansion of our programme of impactful investigation and applied solutions. The refurbishment of this space will also allow multiple students to conduct their research projects (BSc, MSc, and PhD) and provide a “future-proofed” lab that can guarantee availability for these types of projects going forward, ensuring we continue to deliver the highest standards for marine research.
Edinburgh Napier would benefit considerably from a custom-created space that can integrate the advances of technology to facilitate in person and remote audience experiences, as well as community engagement, while providing a high-quality resource for students, staff, partners, and the local community. Developing such a space would see us enabled to support a wide diversity of offers with a focus on championing understanding of our world and fostering the necessary collaboration to deliver the solutions we need.
Inspiring young people about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects is an investment in future solutions. Our STEM Summer School is a 5-day residential initiative for 60 learners from schools located in areas of high multiple deprivation across all local education authorities in Scotland. We particularly want to focus on offering places at the Summer School to pupils living in rural areas of Scotland. These pupils often face distinct geographical and logistical challenges in accessing high-quality STEM education due to more limited transportation links and fewer local STEM facilities that can offer appropriate experiences.
