Find out more about what to include in your portfolio to apply for BA Photography.

BA (Hons) Photography is a popular programme, attracting a large number of applicants. In support of your application to the BA (Hons) Photography programme you may be selected to submit a portfolio of your work. We will be looking for evidence of your understanding of and engagement with photography. We will also be looking for your creativity, visual literacy, interpretative skills and critical evaluation. Consideration will be given to technical knowledge, although a high level of technical competence is not expected at this stage.

Your Portfolio is comprised of three parts.

Part One: Portfolio

A selection of between 10-15 examples of your photography which can include camera phone photographs. These images should be submitted in TIFF or JPEG format. In making your selection, consider the images in which you feel most confident and that best represent your interests and abilities as an image-maker

Technical Specification: Image dimensions should be no larger than 4000 x 3000 pixels and no smaller than 900 x 600.

Part Two: Visual Exercise

Submit a series of between 3 and 6 photographs depicting a recently experienced single event. You may use a camera phone for this exercise if you do not have access to a camera or do not have a camera yet. You can take a realist or fictional approach when taking the images and the nature of the event is entirely up to you. Think about how your final selection of images can communicate different aspects of the event and how best to convey something of the overall story and of the experience of being there.

Technical Specification: Image dimensions should be no larger than 4000 x 3000 pixels and no smaller than 900 x 600.

Give an account of the event and reasons for your selection - circa 100 words (.doc or PDF file)

Part Three: Written Exercise

Choose a photographic image that has recently been published alongside a written article and which explores a current topical issue. In a 300 word essay, analyse the image and discuss how you think it addresses the issues as outlined in the article. Include the date and place of publication and attach the original image and article as a scan or PDF.
