Callum Hunter - one year on from Edinburgh Napier's Degree Show

We catch up with product design graduate Callum Hunter a year on from his own degree show in 2017. Callum is now working for BoConcept, having made the move from product design to interior design soon after his graduation.

You graduated in 2017 from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Product Design. How have the last 12 months been?

I was very fortunate as only a few months after graduation I was employed by BoConcept. This is was not the career path I had once thought I would go down but I have really enjoyed it and learnt so much on the job.

Are you still advancing with plans for your equine therapy chair?

After graduation, I had a meeting with the Prince's Trust. They had got in touch with me after seeing the product in the newspapers during the degree show. Since then I have been working full time at BoConcept and wanted to focus all my energy into this new career path, meaning the equine therapy chair has fallen into the back burner for the time being.

What was your favourite part of studying at Edinburgh Napier?

I loved working towards the degree show. It was a great feeling seeing everything you had worked on for the past year finally come together.

What's your current job role and what does it entail?

My current role is an interior designer for a danish furniture company. My job entails working closely with clients to come up the with best interior space for that person. The most important part of my role is making sure that my design is focused on the clients' needs so they get the best possible outcome.

How big a part did your degree and experience at Edinburgh Napier play in helping you get this role?

The most beneficial thing that I learnt at Edinburgh Napier which has helped me massively in my new role is being able to confidently sell myself and my designs to clients. If I do not believe in my designs there is no chance a client will.

If you could give a graduate once piece of advice for when University is complete, what would it be and why?

Keep your options open when applying to jobs. In my case I applied to all jobs design related, not just product design which I did my degree in and now I am working in interior design and I love it!
