Why did you apply through Clearing?

After being furloughed in 2020, I started looking at applying to college courses. It was quite late into the year before I even started thinking about university instead.

I saw adverts online for Clearing and decided to apply, though I genuinely thought I wouldn’t get in.

How did you find the experience?

The application process was really simple and super easy.

Edinburgh Napier’s team were great. I spoke to one of the engineering lecturers and that was really helpful. They even looked into my previous non-academic experience and offered me entry to second year!

What drew you to Edinburgh Napier?

The University has a really strong reputation for industrial links, which is important for my career aspirations.

I also considered Postgraduate opportunities and the MSc Advanced Structural Engineering at Edinburgh Napier is exactly what I want to aim for in the future.

Don’t be put off by worries or fears, it’s never too late to go back, boost your vocational skills, and open up new doors. If I can do it, anyone can!

Did you have any concerns about being a mature student?

Absolutely! I had been working in construction for years - I can’t think of an environment further from a classroom than a building site. I also hadn’t studied maths in about 12 years.

However, the lecturers have taken a lot of time getting to know me and my situation. I’ve had all the resources and extra time I needed to help develop my skills in areas that were lacking.

The course has gone far above and beyond my expectations.

What advice do you have for anyone applying through Clearing?

Don’t be put off by worries or fears, it’s never too late to go back, boost your vocational skills, and open up new doors. If I can do it, anyone can!
