Adult Nursing with Beth

Adult Nursing student, Beth Shearer, talks about her experiences studying at Edinburgh Napier University

What is your name/year/field of study?Adult Nursing student, Beth Shearer

My name is Beth Shearer, and I am a second-year student nurse studying Adult Nursing.

Why did you choose to study nursing?

Nursing has always been a career path I have wanted to follow as it is a very big profession within my family and both my parents work in careers that involve helping others, which was a big part of the reason for my choice of studies.

What attracted you to Edinburgh Napier?

The main thing that attracted me to Edinburgh Napier is the impressive training facilities they have. Napier was the first place I went for my interview and it set the bar very high for all other universities I visited. I think I knew from the very start that Napier was where I wanted to go and I’m glad about the decision I made.

What have been the highlights of your course so far?

The highlight of the course for me so far has been going into practice. As much as the theory is important, getting to put it into practice is even better. I have really enjoyed the learning opportunities as well as all of the interesting people I've met while out on placement, both patients and staff.

What challenges have you faced?

I think the biggest challenge I have faced so far is the coronavirus pandemic as it put a hold on placements and my studies, however my fellow students have really helped get me through, knowing I’m not the only one in a difficult situation.

Do you have any advice for other students considering studying nursing?

My main advice would be to definitely know that this is for you and that be prepared to put in a lot of work, as while some of your friends are off on summer holidays you will still be working and studying.
