Delivered in your first year of study, the programme builds the academic and English language skills needed for undergraduate success. On successful completion, you are guaranteed progression to your chosen degree at Edinburgh Napier and will continue the remaining stages of your studies at the university.

At the Edinburgh Napier University, you’ll learn from expert tutors in a friendly, supportive environment and put theory into practice using cutting-edge facilities like the Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre. You’ll also gain hands-on experience through placements in both hospitals and community settings across the Lothian and Borders area—with 50% of the course delivered through real-world placement.

Your journey to a nursing career

You’ll develop the essential skills required to demonstrate your eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), alongside earning your degree.

This module strengthens your English language skills across reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on academic use. Emphasis is placed on understanding the conventions of higher education and developing good academic practices.

Learn how society, culture, and social structures influence health and healthcare delivery. The module explores issues such as inequality, social class, gender, and ethnicity, helping you understand how these factors can shape health outcomes and access to care. It encourages reflection on how nurses can respond effectively to diverse social needs within healthcare environments.

Numeracy and Digital Literacy

This module develops your confidence in using numbers and digital tools essential for nursing study and practice. You will practice handling data accurately, performing healthcare-related calculations, and using technology safely in clinical and academic contexts.
