Biography

Hazel Hall PhD MA BA FRSE FHEA FCLIP is Professor of Social Informatics within the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University. She is also Docent in Information Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics at Åbo Akademi, Finland.

Hall is active world-wide in Library and Information Science research, with her main research expertise and interests lying in information sharing in online environments within the context of knowledge management. Other themes in which she maintains an active interest include social computing/media, online communities and collaboration, research impact, and the library and information science professions.

Hall holds (or has held) many distinguished external appointments such Panel Member for Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 Unit of Assessment 34 (Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management), Chair of the Research Councils UK Digital Economy Programme Advisory Board, and Papers Co-Chair of the ASIST Annual Meeting. She also: presents keynote and invited papers at major international conferences and universities; serves on research council grant awarding panels for the EPSRC and ESRC; reviews grants for other national and international bodies such as the Leverhulme Trust, British Academy, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada; examines research degrees in the UK and abroad; is a member of the ESRC-funded Scottish Graduate School of Social Science Deans of Graduate Studies Network; is an editorial board member of major journal titles in her field; regularly serves as a programme committee member for high profile international conferences; and presents and publishes papers widely for both academic and practitioner audiences.

Hall started her career in information services at the University of Birmingham in the mid-1980s. Her first academic post in Scotland was in the Department of Communication and Information Studies at Queen Margaret College (now University), which she held for 10 years from 1989. In 1999 Hall joined Napier. Here she has held a number of posts, including Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor.

Hall has a long track record of working with industry and practitioners. For example, her PhD was sponsored by KPMG, in 2006 she was seconded full-time to TFPL Ltd supported by a grant awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, and between 2009 and 2012 she led the implementation of the UK Library and Information Science Research Coalition (http://lisresearch.org). In addition, she has supervised to completion, and continues to supervise, several ESRC-funded collaborative doctoral studies supported by Skills Development Scotland (SDS).

Hall is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Her extensive work in Library and Information Science has also been recognised through the award of a number of prestigious international prizes including the Jason Farradane Award, the SLA Europe Information Professional Award, and the Information World Review Information Professional Award.

Hall has also won awards for teaching, including the 2019 Clarivate Analytics Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award and the silver (runner-up) SICSA PhD Supervisor of the Year Award 2017.
