Biography
Dr. Brendon Ferrier is a distinguished academic and lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University, where he plays a pivotal role in the School of Applied Sciences. His academic journey began in his hometown of Perth, Western Australia, where he earned a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science and an MSc in Biomechanics from Edith Cowan University (ECU). He later completed his PhD in Biomechanics at ECU, presenting a thesis titled "Characteristics and Determinants of Aerial Surfing with Implications for Representative Task Design." His research has significantly advanced the understanding of aerial surfing and its biomechanics.
In 2003, Dr. Ferrier joined Edinburgh Napier University, where he has been instrumental in teaching and providing sports science support. His unwavering commitment to professional growth led him to earn a second MSc in Sports Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 2010. Beyond academia, he has collaborated with prestigious organizations such as the Australian Institute of Sport, Surfing Australia, Scottish Institute of Sport and recently, Scottish Surfing, where he is currently serving as the Head of Performance Support.
Dr. Ferrier has made a lasting impact on the surfing community through his innovative research and dedication to the sport. As the Co-Founder and Academic Lead of the Surf Lab at Edinburgh Napier University, he has established a pioneering research facility focused on various aspects of surfing, including performance, product design, and health and well-being. In partnership with Lost Shore Surf Resort, this lab leverages Europe's largest wave pool to explore topics such as surf therapy, adaptive surfing, and high-performance techniques, along with supporting industry with R&D provision.
Dr. Ferrier's contributions extend beyond academic pursuits. He actively supports junior competitive surfers and national coaches, offering sports science expertise to enhance performance. His collaborations with organizations like Scottish Surfing and Surfing Australia have further solidified his influence within the surfing world.
Through his dedication to education, research, and community engagement, Dr. Ferrier continues to inspire students and professionals alike, cementing his status as a prominent figure in surf and sports science and biomechanics.
