Transport Scotland recently published a new Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Strategy titled “Scotland’s Trunk Road and Motorway Network: Future Intelligent Transport Systems Strategy 2017”, Having delivered the strategy framework, Transport Scotland wished to start the development of action plans which would set out what their priorities will be across the six themes of the strategy.

To kick off this development work, the organisation hosted a Future ITS Strategy stakeholder event at the Contact and Education Centre in the Traffic Scotland National Control Centre at South Queensferry on Wednesday 28 March, 2018. The event was built around the six Themes of the ITS Strategy, followed by a longer ‘thought piece’ session with roving mic discussion.

Richard Llewellyn from the Transport Research Institute was invited to lead and facilitate the thought piece session. The theme for the session was 'Horizon Scanning' - looking at the transport network user's future needs and how they might be met by emerging Intelligent Transport Systems technologies. The event was attended by over 60 experienced transport practitioners, system suppliers and representatives from national government.
