Education for parenthood
Preparation for parenting is a critical aspect of parents’ transition to parenthood and an important part of the midwife’s role. There are books available entirely dedicated to the topic (Nolan 2020; Perkins 2019), which midwives can use to inform their role as educators. To capture a few facets of parenthood education, this chapter addresses the role of 21st-century technology, the new continuity of care model, birth planning, empowering women, partner preparation, curriculum development, self-care and mental health approaches, the importance of measuring birth satisfaction, and tailoring learning to meet individualised needs. This content is designed to assist the reader with preparing for the role as an educator of women, birthing people, partners, and families.
