HUDS and Senses: Leveraging Game Design to Enhance Situational Awareness for Telepresence Robot Operation
Remotely operated telepresence robots are increasing in prevalence across several domains ranging from highly critical and difficult tasks in challenging and contested spaces, to creative and recreational usage of drones. A significant challenge for robot operation is for the operators to be able to achieve situational awareness for the state and surroundings of the robot. This paper posits that there are lessons to be learned from the field of Games Design, which has a significant amount of learned in experience designing user experiences that attempt to effectively communicate to players what is happening in virtual worlds, often to non-humanoid avatars. The paper outlines a number of established user experience and interface elements from Game Design and relates them to remote robot operation with the ultimate aim of producing a Telepresence Robot Operator Experience Framework.
