Seeing the signs : involving students as researchers across the disciplines via a research-based teaching framework
The work reported in this guide was undertaken as part of a
Northumbria University Research-informed Teaching project called ‘Seeing the Signs: involving students as researchers across the disciplines.’ The project supported the transfer of the pioneering Signs research-based teaching framework, which originated in the School of Health, Community & Education Studies on the Joint Honours in Childhood Studies, to a range of different curricular contexts within and beyond the university.

The Signs framework, based on the Signs teaching methodology (Knights, 2005) and underpinned by the principles of Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL), involves students in gathering, analysing and ‘publishing’ primary research data. It is reported in detail in a companion Red Guide (Sambell, 2009).

This guide offers an overview of the different ways in which lecturers from different Schools, programme areas and disciplines adapted and used the Signs Framework in their own teaching contexts. Four case studies will be presented, written by the lecturers involved.
