Sound Dramaturgy for Poetic Documentaries
Dramaturgy is just as relevant for documentaries as it is for feature films, if not more so. Dramaturgical knowledge can considerably support and facilitate the development, planning, and production of documentaries. This essay discusses the importance of the dramaturgical impact of sound design onto poetic / cinematic documentaries. Case studies get discussed by way of example, as The End of Time (Mettler, CN/CH 2012), The Island of the Hungry Ghosts (Bradly, D/UK/AU 2018), 'The Whale and the Raven' (Leuze, 2019, D/CN), Aquarela (Kossakovsky, UK/D/ DK/US 2018), and El sembrador de estrellas (The Sower of Stars) by Lois Patiño.
