Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to support self-management of anxiety and depression following stroke: development and feasibility cluster randomised trial
: Anxiety and depression are common after stroke. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses teach people with long-term conditions (LTCs) skills such as meditation to help them self-manage anxiety and depression, but often people do not follow the full course. Working with stroke survivors and stroke experts we aim to make stroke-specific changes to the standard course, and build in techniques to help stroke survivors follow the whole course. When changes are complete, we will recruit 36 stroke survivors who will do the adapted course (HEADS: UP) with a family carer (72 participants). We will ask participants to complete research questionnaires before HEADS: UP and at the end of the course. We will ask what they thought about HEADS: UP and the research questionnaires. This data will help us plan a project big enough to find out if HEADS: UP helps people self-manage anxiety and depression in the long-term following stroke.
