Monitoring Of Railway Related Infrastructure Using Optical Fibre Sensors
Student Placement Innovation Voucher as continuation of earlier Standard Innovation Voucher in partnership with Geo-Info Ltd.
This project aims to extend the earlier project by assessing the performance of the same optical fibre sensors for full scale applications. At least one of two very practical problems will be analysed. The first problem is the slope stability of a real embankment adjacent to a railway line. This is effectively a direct extension and real application of the work performed under the original Standard Innovation Voucher and it will enable an assessment of installation processes accounting for inherent and natural soil variability, as well as their performance in the long term. The second problem is scour monitoring under railway bridges. This is an industrial problem that can lead to train cancellations and delays, and their related effects on reduction of service standards.
