  VR Peritoneal Dialysis (VRPD) Training System version 2.0

End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in children is rare - approximately 100-120 children enter ESKD per year in the UK, of whom about 30-35% will commence PD as their initial type of dialysis. Yet over 30,000 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients require dialysis from over 84 dialysis centres in UK. More than 3 million people suffer from CKD and are expected to require some form of dialysis in their lifetime.

The purpose of this project is to improve the first version of the Virtual Reality Peritoneal Dialysis training system following the evaluation results. The system will be updated both on interface design (UI) as well as the interaction provided to improve user experience (UX). The updated system will facilitate patients (both adult and paediatric) who are pre-dialysis and suitable for/contemplating undertaking home-based therapy, peritoneal dialysis(PD) as well as the trainee nurses and other allied health professionals and medical staff involved in the dialysis process. y as a mode of education and training for both families and healthcare staff members, to provide proof of concept that VR can be used in healthcare training.
In addition, the updated system will have anonymised the current training equipment to comply with legal requirements from the official equipment providers.

The updated system will be provided to Kidney Research UK (KRUK) and NHS for evaluation in different hospitals across the UK. A large provision of VR headsets has already been distributed to the dialysis units. The evaluation process will follow the previous customised Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) that we developed to identify the system usability, user experience (UX) and system training efficiency. The results of the updated project will be disseminated in future events organised by KRUK and reputable journal publications.
