BN Nursing (Learning Disabilities)

The Course

What do you like about your course and why?
ENU is a very inclusive university. I have a disability and have felt well supported here. The course content is very varied with a mix of theory modules,  skills classes and placements. The learning platforms consist of a mixture of videos, case studies, podcasts, and academic journals. ENU are great at meeting the diverse learning needs of students.

What's your dream career/job? Is your course preparing you for that?
Throughout my nursing journey, I wanted to know exactly what I would be doing when I qualified, but now I use the phrase 'the world is my oyster'. The amazing thing about nursing is, there are so many career options to choose from. You can even take a detour and try something completely different. Everything you learn in nursing will serve you well for whatever you decide to do. You can even combine a nursing degree with another degree.

Have you had the opportunity to undertake placements or study abroad opportunities on your course?
I have been part of a student leadership program where I have had the opportunity to be published in a book. I have also attended conferences in Manchester, Belfast and Lancashire.

Is there something about your industry or subject that no one is talking about enough?
The 'Role of learning disability Nurses' is something that needs to be talked about more. Learning disability nurses support people with learning disabilities of all ages in all kinds of settings. Learning disability nurses advocate for the rights of patients to help them access health care services more easily. They educate other healthcare professionals on how to best support somebody with a learning disability. They help reduce barriers for people, enabling them to live more independently and feel more included in their local communities. Learning disability nurses adopt a 'person-centered approach'. When delivering care to patients. Person centeredness helps to create a special bond between the nurse and patient. It helps to bring out the individuality in patients, helping to celebrate their uniqueness and authentic personalities, rather than seeing them as a patient.

What advice would you give someone just starting your course?
My advice to someone starting a course is: go to the Freshers fair and find out what clubs and societies you can join. Get involved in extracurricular activities... building networks early on will help you build confidence as you progress in your studies. And finally, try something new! There is nothing to lose!

Student Experience

Do you feel at home at ENU?
Definitely. ENU is a vibrant , inclusive and supportive university.

Are you involved in any sports or societies at the university?
I am part of the Scottish Learning Disability Nursing Network student group. This is a brilliant group to be involved in and it's a great networking opportunity. We have done a Kiltwalk to raise money for Scottish Autism and created social media content to help raise more awareness about learning disability nursing. The group also get involved in a different campaign to help promote learning disability nursing.

Who's your biggest cheerleader through University?
The lecturers on my course are my biggest cheerleaders. The programme leader is very  'student centred' in her role in supporting students. She is an excellent role model for learning disability nursing as she adopts the same person-centred practices to the student as learning disability nurses to their patients.

What helps you through tough times at Napier? Have you used the support services?
I love writing. It's a way of helping me de-stress after a difficult day. I have recently starting writing student blogs. I have learnt that blogging helps me discover my authentic self and has also brought out my creative side. I also love 80s disco dancing, spending time in the sauna and anything energetic!

Studying in Edinburgh

What's the best thing about studying in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh is a vibrant city. Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, arty or sporty, there is something for everyone.

What's one thing you'll take with you from your experience in Edinburgh/Scotland/Edinburgh Napier for the rest of your life?
I have learnt how important it is to live in the moment and cherish the small accomplishments that I've made. University can be challenging but it's also been a wonderful experience. But it goes so quickly. It has helped me realise that there is no better time than the present. 'The past is history, the future is a mystery but being present in the moment is the most precious gift of all".
