Carmen from Spain talks about her time studying at Edinburgh Napier University.
Carmen Miravet Zaragozá, BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science
Can you tell us about what you’re currently doing?
I am currently studying for an MSc Degree in Immunology at Imperial College London.
How does this build on your undergraduate experience at Edinburgh Napier University?
I graduated from the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science in 2018 and was immediately successful in gaining a place on the MSc in Immunology at Imperial.
Within a couple of weeks, I saw how well the Immunology modules in third and fourth year had prepared me, especially in immunology, and this put me in a very good position for the MSc. The modules by Dr Eva Malone gave a very strong and in-depth immunological background, which has made my life so much easier than it might have been!
What did you like about Edinburgh Napier University?
I went to school in Spain, and when I came to apply for undergraduate courses there were very few options in Biomedical Studies there. The UK appealed, and Edinburgh Napier stood out for the way the course was set up and the modules I would study. It was also a fantastic city to live in for three years! (I was a direct entry into year 2.)
The lecturers at Edinburgh Napier were all really good, and compared to the other UK students on our MSc group I had good notes and slides to help me settle into the Masters material. The course at ICL is six months taught and six months research focused, and I’m just beginning my research now. I learnt how to write good abstracts from my time at Edinburgh Napier, and the grounding I got in critical thinking has been very helpful, as was the practical lab experience and even the approach to essay writing. I’ve felt very well prepared.
Take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you. It’s a very supportive environment and the teaching at Edinburgh Napier is excellent and can put you in a great position for the next step after graduation.
