Before you apply

Here's everything you need to know to get you started with your application.

This page will cover:

What you'll need

These are the documents you will need to complete your application:

  • Academic transcript
  • Reference
  • Personal statement
  • Evidence of English Language proficiency (if applicable).

If you're an international student...

If you're joining us from outside of the UK, you'll also need:

  • A copy of your passport
  • If you've previously undertaken a course in the UK, we require a copy of all visas and corresponding CAS letters from previous institutions confirming the start and end dates of the course you studied.

Academic transcript

If you have graduated already, you'll need a copy of your degree certificate to complete your application, and an academic transcript.

If you are in your final year and haven't graduated yet, you'll just need to send your transcript to date.

If you're an Edinburgh Napier University undergraduate student, you don't need to send transcripts as part of your application, as we have the information already.

If your experience is more practical than academic, and you don't meet the standard entry requirements, you can still apply, many courses are open to considering relevant work experience too. Get in touch with pgadmissions@napier.ac.uk

Reference

You’ll need to provide an email address for an academic reference, from someone like a personal tutor on your undergraduate degree. If you’ve been out of education for more than three years, you should provide an email address for an employer reference, from a manager or supervisor. It must be an official reference, and therefore you need to provide their business or academic email address,( e.g. @napier.ac.uk rather than @yahoo.com).

If you’re an Edinburgh Napier University undergraduate student, you don’t need to send a reference as part of your application, as we have the information already.

If you can’t get your reference ready in time for an application deadline, don’t worry, you can submit your application without them. If we make you an offer, it will be conditional until we receive any missing information.

Personal statement

Your personal statement should be a single side of A4, or roughly 500 words. It should cover:

  • Why you are applying for this course at this particular institution
  • The skills you have to enable you to study this subject at this level
  • Which aspects of the course specifically appeal to you, and which parts you are looking forward to studying
  • Your goals for the future, for example, how is this degree going to help you advance or change your career?

You should be:
  • Informed
  • Enthusiastic
  • Positive
  • Unique
  • Specific
  • Honest

Before you submit your application, make sure you proofread it so spelling and grammar mistakes don’t trip you up.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements will be different for each course, and you’ll be able to find these on the relevant course page. Usually, the requirement will be an undergraduate degree.

However, if you don’t meet the exact requirements for the course you're interested in, don’t be put off applying altogether. Many courses are willing to look at equivalent work experience, so get in touch with pgadmissions@napier.ac.uk to discuss your application.

If you're an international student...

If you're from outside the UK, we provide general entry requirements using the qualifications from your country.

If you’re from abroad and English isn’t your first language, you will usually have to take an English language test, unless you studied your undergraduate degree in a country where English is the official language within two years of the course start date. Otherwise, we ask for evidence that you have the correct level of English language competency.

Your English language test must normally have been taken within two years of you starting to study with us.

When to apply

Our courses start in September, January and May. You can apply all year round but some courses do have deadlines, so check the course page and apply as soon as you're ready to make sure you don't miss out.

Any applicable deadlines will be displayed on the course page.

If you're an international student...

If you require a visa to study here, you will need to take in to account the time it takes to complete this process. We advise you to get started with your application as soon as possible.
