Business Start-up Bootcamp

Grow your big idea into a business.

The world of employment is constantly changing, and more and more people are creating options outside of the traditional workplace. If you have an idea you think could turn into a business, this course will ensure you can start building on solid foundations. The bootcamp is an intensive immersion in the start-up planning process, to help you ascertain a sustainable business model for your venture.  

On this course, you will:
  • Explore concepts of business, marketing and market research;
  • Define your vision and goals;
  • Determine your values and your target customer;
  • Begin exploring pricing and cost structures;
  • Plan, test and critique the validity of your idea;
  • Create an online Business Model Canvas.

Entry requirements 

The course is aimed at individuals wanting to explore starting up a business.

Students will usually have a relevant undergraduate degree, but lesser qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants must be a Scottish or EU resident to be eligible for this funded intake. 

A limited number of places are available with full funding from the Scottish Funding Council, to support applicants from Scotland and the EU.

Start date 

The course runs for a month from Saturday 13th June until 11th July. It begins with three intensive days, and proceeds at your own pace after that. The three full days are online and structured in bitesize blocks (concept, taster exercise, action on your own business).

The deadline for applications is 28 May 2020, but places will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

How you’ll be taught and assessed 

You’ll be taught online via our easy-to-access online portal to study at your own pace over 4 weeks. You’ll typically complete around 20 hours of study per week during the course, made up of teaching time and independent study, which you can fit flexibly around your commitments. There is a weekly ‘Office Hour’ for live engagement with the tutor.

You’ll also complete a single assessment, a portfolio of evidence to support the development of your idea in a structured and highly visual manner to complete the course.

Successful completion of this short course is worth 10 SCQF credits at level 11.
