Learning Outcomes
Discover the richness, diversity and distinctive voices of modern Scottish literature through a range of engaging texts and genres. This module explores novels, plays, short stories and poetry selected from the Scottish Set Text list used in National 5 and Higher English, giving you the opportunity to deepen your subject knowledge while developing your skills as a critical reader.
By the end of this module you will be able to:
Discuss ideas about Scottish identity, culture and history, considering how writers use language and literary techniques to communicate their ideas.
Develop your own interpretations of texts, engage with different perspectives, and build confidence in expressing your personal response to literature.
Strengthen your reading and academic writing skills through learning how to analyse texts in a thoughtful and informed way.
Assessment
Assessment is based on a portfolio of reading diaries. Your final 2,500-word portfolio will include three reading diaries selected from the four genres of novel, play, short story and poetry studied during the module.
Completion of this course will gain credits towards the 80 subject-specific credits required by the GTCS to teach English.
