Module Overview

Ultrasound guidance is the gold standard for vascular access device insertion. Research has demonstrated improved success and reduced complications when ultrasound is used in place of blind landmark techniques. Ultrasound training is now recommended as part of training central venous access device placement. In addition to simulation training a good knowledge of the physics of ultrasound and how this relates to image production and interpretation is deemed necessary.

This module encompasses the key elements of best practice to maintain and improve clinical outcomes and integrates Vessel Health & Vein Preservation. The module is designed to facilitate continuous professional development and learning, along with supporting reflective and evidence-based practice.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of basic ultrasound physics.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the knobology.
  • Justify your transducer selection for vascular access procedures.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of techniques to optimise your image.
  • Demonstrate a successful puncture on a phantom.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of ultrasound to assist in vascular access device insertion.

As part of the module, you will have the opportunity to arrange a remote or face to face ultrasound workshop to help improve your skills.

Assessment

Success of this module includes the completion of a competency-based portfolio that will demonstrate your achievement of the work-based element of the module. This portfolio will also provide evidence of the development of your critical and reflective skills and provide evidence of how your learning during the module has been incorporated into clinical practice. The practice-based portfolio contains competencies that are considered necessary to safety insert a midline.

Practice-based competencies must be signed off by your clinical supervisor as having been achieved. Therefore, prior to starting the module, you should identify a competent mentor/supervisor who can support you to gain competence following completion of the module.
