Sustainable Development Goal 13

Climate action

The thirteenth of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals is Climate Action - to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Approach

At Edinburgh Napier University, we are committed to Climate Action. We actively encourage our students, staff and members of our wider community to be part of the wider conversation about sustainability at Edinburgh Napier.

We embed sustainability into the way we manage our estates and run our campuses, continuing to invest in energy efficiency, introducing low-carbon heating systems, sourcing renewable electricity, and meeting green building standards. Our travel policies encourage active and low-carbon commuting, and we give weight to environmental impact in our procurement. Through waste reduction, water efficiency, and biodiversity initiatives, we are building resilience to climate risks and showing leadership in climate responsibility.

Research

Research at Edinburgh Napier directly addresses climate change mitigation and adaptation with interdisciplinary teams, for example our Transport Research Institute tackling energy transitions, transport decarbonisation, and sustainable construction.

Our partnerships with industry, government, and communities through our innovation hub ensure that research findings don’t just sit on the shelf but inform practical responses to the climate emergency.

Teaching

We embed climate literacy across our curriculum in every course, giving our students the knowledge and skills they need to contribute to climate solutions.

From engineering and environmental sciences to business and design, our courses integrate sustainability principles and explore the challenges of achieving net zero.

Degree programmes specifically addressing Climate Action include:

Sustainability is also evident in many of our modules. Our students work on live projects with external partners, tackling real-world climate issues. In doing so, we prepare our graduates to become climate-aware professionals and leaders.
