Securing Our Future: Joyee Bashir is Building a Cyber-Strong Community
Empowering a cyber community
Joyee Bashir didn’t initially plan to study Cyber Security— but once she discovered it, there was no looking back. What began as an interest in computer science quickly evolved into a passion for cyber security, a discipline that brought together all the areas she loved most: networking, engineering, and critical thinking. Edinburgh Napier University, offering the cyber security degree certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), stood out as the clear choice.
Now studying Cyber Security and Forensics, Joyee has embraced every opportunity the university has to offer — especially as President 24/25 of ENUSEC, Edinburgh Napier University Security Society. As head of the committee, she plays a key role in maintaining one of the university’s largest and most dynamic student communities.
“Cyber is a big thing right now, and a lot of people have a bit of an interest. That’s all you need to join ENUSEC” - The society welcomes anyone from students in cyber or other disciplines to professionals in the industry, creating a network that extends far beyond graduation. Her aim is to foster a lasting community that supports learning, collaboration, and meaningful connection.
Cyber, Forensics, and Finding Her Focus
Two moments have left a lasting impact on Joyee's academic career. First, she developed a deep interest in digital forensics — “Like a lot of people, I like a good true crime documentary”. Her lectures on forensic evidence being evaluated in court of law were powerful, and was an opportunity to apply her outside-of-uni interests in a practical, academic setting.
Second, a lecture organised by Professor Bill Buchanan brought world-renowned cyber security expert Bruce Schneier into the classroom. Being able to hear Bruce talk, and getting to interact with someone so influential in the industry was a defining moment in her studies — “a surreal experience”.
Joyee also completed a placement as part of her degree, which provided valuable experience and helped her discover how she could contribute to real-world cyber security teams. She reflects the transition to working in a corporate job challenging, but her growth was undeniable.
Edinburgh Napier has given Joyee more than a degree — it has offered her community, leadership opportunities, and the confidence to shape her own future in cyber.
