Professor Lis Neubeck: At the heart of Scottish cardiovascular research
Redefining the future of heart health
A global leader in cardiovascular health, Professor Lis Neubeck is tearing down outdated models and building smarter, faster, more equitable ways to detect and treat heart disease. As Head of the Centre for Cardiovascular Health and Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing at Edinburgh Napier University, she’s pivotal to research that doesn’t just push boundaries — it redraws them. Her work focuses on atrial fibrillation detection, access to care, and digital health interventions—each with the potential to shift how we treat and manage heart disease.
Professor Neubeck has been working with Edinburgh Napier University for almost 9 years now, and states that Napier “feels very connected to the community [and] feels very connected to the health service. We’re working alongside people who have the same drive to improve heart health... For me, it’s about being at a university that really values the work that we do and supports it to develop”.
Putting women's health at the heart of research
One of the most striking examples of Professor Neubeck’s impact is the newly launched SCAD (Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection) clinic at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. Often misdiagnosed, SCAD disproportionately affects women and demands tailored treatment approaches. Professor Neubeck’s research with survivors brought to light the need for a dedicated clinic in Scotland, driving forward a two-year pilot in collaboration with leading cardiologists. It’s a model of how bold, patient-led research can lead to real-world innovation. With over £5 million in competitive funding, international leadership roles, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Royal College of Nursing Scotland, Professor Lis Neubeck is not just part of the conversation — she’s leading it.
