From a come-and-try session at Edinburgh Napier to Professional Rugby Union player, Panashe Muzambe now coaches the next generation of players.
Uncovering a passion for Rugby
When Panashe Muzambe arrived at Edinburgh Napier University to study Sport and Exercise Science, she never imagined that a decision to try a new sport would change her life. Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Edinburgh from her early teens, Panashe came to university with a sporting background in basketball. Rugby was not part of the plan. However, during her third year at Edinburgh Napier, she attended a women’s rugby “come and try” session and quickly discovered a passion for the game.
As an early member of Edinburgh Napier’s women’s rugby team, Panashe embraced every opportunity to learn. Supported by coaches and teammates, she developed her skills, built her confidence and by her final year became rugby team captain. Edinburgh Napier University was where Panashe could challenge herself, step outside her comfort zone and discover her potential in both sport and leadership.
Making History in Scottish Rugby
Panashe's rugby journey accelerated rapidly following her time at university. After representing Watsonians Rugby Club and impressing at regional level, she earned a call-up to the Scotland Women's squad. In 2019, she made history as the first Black woman to play rugby for Scotland, making her debut during the Women's Six Nations Championship.
Since then, she has continued to develop her career and inspire others. Alongside representing Scotland on the international rugby stage, she has competed at elite club level and become a respected voice within Scottish sport. Panashe is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in rugby, encouraging others through her coaching to seize opportunities when they arise. She was recently appointed Head Coach of Heriot's Rugby Women for the 2025/26 season, helping to support and inspire the next generation of female rugby players.
From Rugby Player to Coach: Exploring Careers in Sport
Panashe’s journey highlights the breadth of opportunities available within the world of sport. While she has built an impressive career as an international rugby player, she has also developed experience as a coach, helping others to grow and succeed in the game she loves.
A career in sport is rarely limited to one path. Whether your ambition is to compete at the highest level, coach the next generation, work in performance analysis, sports development, strength and conditioning, community engagement or leadership roles, the skills and experiences gained at university can open doors across the industry.
