A business technology expert has thanked staff and colleagues at Edinburgh Napier University for pushing him to complete his PhD at the age of 60.

Olusegun Akintola collected his doctorate in Business Management during a graduation ceremony at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Olusegun decided to return to ENU during the pandemic, where he had previously completed a Masters degree.

His aim was to build on the skills he has developed as a project manager and business analyst – most recently managing technological changes at NHS health boards.Olusegun Akintola collects his PhD in Business Management from Edinburgh Napier University at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall

Olusegun said: “I didn’t have any second thoughts about coming back.

“Personally for me, my career progression has always been achieved through academia. I’ve always had an appetite to learn more, so I’ve gravitated towards it.

“I was thinking about what I could do to expand my horizons, and this was ideal.

“There have been tough times, but the team at The Business School has been so supportive.

“For anyone who wants to take what they do to the next notch, Edinburgh Napier is the place to do it.”

As he celebrates his second ENU graduation, Olusegun has become a part of The Business School.

Alongside his own research into technology and supply chain management, he has been tutoring and teaching postgraduate students.

His hope is to provide the same experience he has had during his time at the University.

Olusegun added: “The approach of staff here has always been so dynamic and supportive.

“My supervisor, Professor Eoin Plant, has kept pushing me to be at my best – I love that. Even when I have finished a part, he has been pushing me to write papers or do the next thing.

“It feels to good to be able to support the next groups of students as a tutor. I have enjoyed sharing all the experiences I have garnered over the years.

“If I had the chance to do it again, I would. It was a process I enjoyed despite the challenges.”

Olusegun graduated alongside fellow students from Edinburgh Napier University’s Business School.
