ENU scored highly in sustainable food, staff and student engagement, and sustainable development education
Edinburgh Napier has risen ten places in the latest People & Planet University League, climbing from 65th to 55th in the UK and from third to second in Scotland.
The standings, which are described as the only independent league table of UK universities focusing entirely on environmental and ethical performance, ranks institutions across a set of key criteria.
Among the categories assessed are carbon reduction, energy sources, waste and recycling, and workers' rights.
The improved ranking highlights the University’s continued work across these areas – including some notable successes:
Sustainable Food
A score of 70% in this category recognised the University’s achievement of a one-star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association through the Food Made Good Standard. This reflects the work of the Catering team and the wider University community in adopting more ethical and environmentally responsible food practices.
Staff and Student Engagement
A strong 75% score in this category reflects the work we have done to inform, inspire and involve the University community in sustainability action. Campaigns such as Every Action Counts, alongside dedicated online resources at napier.ac.uk/environment, played a central role in driving participation and visibility throughout the year.
Education for Sustainable Development
An impressive 91% score acknowledges the continued integration of sustainability into learning and teaching, supported by the ENhance Curriculum Framework and tools such as the Sustainability Quick Guide.
Professor Gary Hutchison, Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy Board of Governance (ESSBG), welcomed the results.
He said: “Maintaining our 2:1 ranking in the People & Planet University League is an achievement we’re incredibly proud of.
“This result reflects the hard work, dedication and passion of our colleagues and students, who are committed to driving meaningful environmental and social change.
“While we’re delighted with the progress we’ve made so far, we know that sustainability is an ongoing journey.
“We’re determined to keep improving our practices, creating a university that is not only environmentally responsible, but an inspiring and sustainable place for people to work, study and thrive.”
