Dr Patrick White MCIEEM, FHEA

Lecturer in Conservation Biology

I am an ecologist who is passionate about research that has practical applications for conservation of threatened species and for the wider profession of ecology and environmental management. To this end I have a wide range of interests and I apply a variety of research techniques, including observational studies, experimental work and modelling.

My background has been in applied avian ecology, including conservation of farmland passerines, grouse and geese. More recently I have also become interested in mammalian conservation and I supervise two PhD projects, on otters and ibex. I want to improve the techniques ecological consultants and researchers use, and recent work has focused on detection probabilities of remote cameras, and improving avian breeding simulation models.

Outside of my work I contribute via membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) Scottish Section Committee and the IUCN Otter and Grouse Specialist Groups.

My teaching on our CIEEM accredited MSc Wildlife Biology & Conservation programme closely aligns with my research skills, contributing to the areas of statistics and modelling, applied ecology, biodiversity monitoring and analysis, and field surveying techniques.

I was a postdoctoral research scientist in Upland Research Group at the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust [2010-2013] and did my PhD at the Centre for Agri-environmental Research, University of Reading, in conjunction with the Allerton Project, Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust [2005-2009]. I have a BSc in Ecological Sciences from the University of Edinburgh [2001-2005].
