Love and Border
Mae Sot is a border city in western Thailand, a few kilometres from the border with Myanmar, and home to sizeable community of Myanmarese migrants and refugees. Myanmar’s severe political and economic problems, including violent oppression of ethnic minorities, ethnic cleansing and ongoing civil war, have seen hundreds of thousands flee across the border and resettle, many in Mae Sot. In this short documentary, four Myanmarese women working for a small Mae Sot-based NGO discuss their experiences with and opinions on both love and the process of resettlement. The film interrogates ideas of migration and resettlement through the prism of the basic human need to be loved. The visual style is based on interviews which explore emotional content filmed in tight close-up, evoking the experience of an intimate conversation and, in doing so, promoting a more empathetic connection between viewer and subject.
