Simulation and measurement of broadband microstrip patch antenna for 3G wireless communications
Bandwidth enhancement and size reduction techniques for microstrip patch antennas are investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. Two types of novel and small broadband stripline-fed microstrip patch antennas for 3G mobile communications are presented: a dual shorted coplanar patch antenna and an E-shaped patch antenna. By introducing thick substrates with low permittivity, broad-band behaviour of the proposed patch antennas can be easily achieved By optimising the geometry, using ground planes and short circuits, the size of the antennas can be minimised correspondingly. The predicted and measured results of typical impedance behaviour of the proposed designs are discussed.
