English language requirements

If your first language is not English, we may ask you to provide evidence of your English language abilities when you apply to study at Edinburgh Napier University.

Minimum English language requirements

When you apply to study with us, we may ask you to undertake an approved language test to demonstrate your level of competency in English.

Exemptions

You may not require an English language test if:

  • You have completed your high school qualifications in English, or;
  • Your bachelors degree was taught and examined in English.

We accept the following English language tests. The grades below are the minimum requirements and some courses require a higher level. Visit our course listings for further information. If you hold a language certificate that is not listed below, please get in touch with us.

Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, in addition to the tests listed on the following sections of this page, we will accept the following tests as evidence of English language proficiency for students joining us in 2020.

IELTS Academic Test

Where an IELTS Academic Test is provided that was taken more than two years ago, but less than four years prior to the start of the intended degree course, the University will consider the acceptability of the test on a case-by-case basis dependent on evidence of use of English language in employment or education since the test was taken.

Edinburgh Napier English Language Courses

Edinburgh Napier applicants with an offer of a place conditional on English Language can undertake a free online placement test with our English for Academic Purposes team. Depending on the outcome of the test, the applicant may then be able to enrol on one of our online pre-sessional English programmes which lead onto entry to the University.
