Why study a pre-sessional English course? 

Our pre-sessional courses are designed for students joining undergraduate or postgraduate courses at Edinburgh Napier University. Whether you need to increase your English language scores for entry or you have reached the required English level but would like to learn more about studying in a UK university before starting your degree, we have a course suitable for you. 

Courses include 20 hours of classes per week covering: 

  • academic writing, reading, listening and speaking skills
  • research and presentation skills
  • UK academic culture
  • Scottish and UK culture
  • practical English
  • Edinburgh Napier University Language Test preparation (not applicable to our 4-week academic skills induction programme)

Open Pre-sessional English courses

Note: the final exam takes place in the final week of the course. Students are offered a resit the following week if they fail. Students signing up for a pre-sessional course must ensure that they are available the week after the end of the course in case they have a resit.

Visa and immigration requirements

If you are coming to study a pre-sessional English language course before your degree course, and you require a Tier 4 (General) student visa to study in the UK, you will need to undertake an English language test, which has been approved by the United Kingdom Visa and Immigration Service (UKVI), at a UKVI-approved test centre.

There are two approved tests;

During the first trimester of your degree, you will continue to be supported in your transition to UK academic culture by your pre-sessional tutors. Weekly workshops will help you understand the expectations on your course of study and introduce you to the following support services.
