English language pre-sessional courses

Our pre-sessional courses will help you achieve the English language requirements for your degree course, as well as introduce you to our academic culture and life in Edinburgh.

Why study a pre-sessional English course? 

Our pre-sessional courses are designed for students joining undergraduate or postgraduate courses at Edinburgh Napier University. Whether you need to increase your English language scores for entry or you have reached the required English level but would like to learn more about studying in a UK university before starting your degree, we have a course suitable for you. 

Courses include 20 hours of classes per week covering: 

  • academic writing, reading, listening and speaking skills
  • research and presentation skills
  • UK academic culture
  • Scottish and UK culture
  • practical English
  • Edinburgh Napier University Language Test preparation 
  • 20 hours of class per week
  • Small class sizes and ongoing academic support
  • Dedicated practical support with all aspects of life in Edinburgh
  • Conversation Club and social activities

January 2019 courses

Study on one of our pre-sessional course before starting your degree course in January 2019. Choose from our year-long, 12-week or 6-week courses, designed for students who have to meet the English requirement of IELTS for UKVI overall band 6.0 with no skills below 5.5 for their chosen degrees.

Visa and immigration requirements

If you are coming to study a pre-sessional English language course before your degree course, and you require a Tier 4 (General) student visa to study in the UK, you will need to undertake an English language test, which has been approved by the United Kingdom Visa and Immigration Service (UKVI), at a UKVI-approved test centre.

There are two approved tests;

During the first trimester of your degree, you will continue to be supported in your transition to UK academic culture by your pre-sessional tutors. Weekly workshops will help you understand the expectations on your course of study and introduce you to the following support services.
