Transport Research Institute (TRI)

Find out more about Edinburgh Napier's renowned Transport Research Institute (TRI).

TRI was established in 1996, building on Edinburgh Napier’s success as a provider of teaching in Civil and Transportation Engineering. TRI is the most well-known transport research group in Scotland and in the top ten in the UK, delivering high quality transport research, consultancy and other knowledge transfer projects in high impact settings, with strong links to government & industry.

TRI’s skills and academic proficiency cover a wide range of fields, from engineering and AI, through economics and mathematical modelling, to sociology and psychology. As part of Edinburgh Napier University, we offer academic objectivity, and we work with partners at other transport research institutions internationally and across Scotland.

TRI's Transport research will develop under the following updated thematic areas:

  • Climate change, Environment & Health
  • Demand and behavioural change in the aftermath of COVID-19
  • Legislative & Policy framework
  • Infrastructure & technology
  • Interdisciplinary Perspectives
This combination of expertise and research objectivity means we can provide rigorous and reliable analysis to help inform decisions and develop effective policies. TRI has a strong record of peer-reviewed academic publications in international journals and participates regularly in transport events and conferences, whilst maintaining strong links with industry. We work and plan to research at a strategic level with European Commission research programmes, as well as national and local governments around the world.

Courses

The Transport Research Institute, together with the wider Civil and Transportation Subject Group, have provided the MSc in Transport Planning and Engineering since 1991.  Over that time period, many of our alumni have obtained senior positions in public bodies, local authorities, consultancies and 3rd sector transport related organisations, as well as continuing studies on to PhD level.  The course is accredited by the ICE, CIHT and IHE for chartered engineer status (CEng), as well as by the CIHT/TPS for chartered transport planning professional (CTPP).  The course is offered as a full time, part time or distance/online option.
