Professor Brian King is a Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University and brings expertise in migration, emerging Asia-Pacific tourism markets and resort development.
In addition to being Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier Brian is Associate Dean in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and was previously Professor at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Edinburgh he has been involved in tourism and hospitality for over 30 years. He has held various academic roles including Pro Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community) and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students). He was also head of a leading School of Hospitality and Tourism for over nine years (1998-2007).
Building on industry experience acquired in airlines, tour operations and hotels, he has held Board positions with Destination Melbourne, Ocean Spirit Cruises and Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School. He has written and edited books on tourism and hospitality marketing, resorts, tourism in the Asia-Pacific Region and most recently on VFR travel. He is the founder and current Editor-in-chief of Tourism, Culture and Communication and has been Visiting Professor at Universities in Italy, Fiji and the USA. He has consulted extensively to international agencies on tourism marketing and workforce development.
He is a frequent media commentator and chair/facilitator of industry excellence awards. He is an elected Fellow and Treasurer of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST) which includes many of the world’s leading tourism scholars. He has a longstanding commitment to enhancing the reputation and effectiveness of tourism education and chairs the assessment/accreditation panel of the International Centre for Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE). In addition to his academic interests, he has a passion for languages and performs orchestral and chamber music (bassoon).

Key Research Activities
His research activities include tourism and hospitality marketing with an emphasis on cultural dimensions, emerging Asia-Pacific markets and destinations and VFR travel. He has also explored the intersection between tourism, migration and international education. His active interest in the China market is assisted by his location in Hong Kong. He brings his research work and industry engagements to Scotland through Napier’s Tourism Industry Leadership Programme, which had its origins in Melbourne.
