What are the entry requirements for Football Coaching and Development?
In addition to meeting the academic criteria, applicants will normally be expected to demonstrate in their personal statement that they have relevant coaching experience showing a commitment to a career in this industry. Where applicants do not meet the academic criteria, extensive coaching experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of formal qualifications.
Our entry requirements indicate both Standard and Minimum qualifications with which we normally accept students. Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications.
Selection Day
As part of the application process you will also be asked to join us at Edinburgh Napier to be part of an interview, after which you will be involved in a live coaching session with other applicants.
Can you go straight into second year of university?
Advanced entry into Year 2 or Year 3 of this course is possible for students with suitable qualifications. See the individual year tabs for more information.

Minimum Year 1
SQA Higher
- Standard Entry Requirement: BBBC including Biology or Human Biology or Chemistry or Physics or PE or Psychology at grade C. In addition to the above academic
requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course
commencement; Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.
- Minimum Offer Entry Requirements: BCCC including Biology or Chemistry or Physics or PE or Psychology at grade C.
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.

A Level
- BCC including Biology or Human Biology or Chemistry or Physics or Psychology or PE.
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.
Irish Leaving Certificate
- Grades H2, H3, H3, H3 at Higher Level including Biology or Human Biology or Chemistry or Physics or PE or Psychology.
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.
BTEC (QCF) Extended Diploma Level 3
- Minimum grades DMM (Distinction, Merit, Merit) in a related subject.
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.
BTEC (QCF) National Diploma Level 3 plus A Level

Minimum grades DM (Distinction, Merit) in a related subject.
- A Level grade C
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.
International Baccalaureate Diploma
- Award of Diploma with 27 points overall with three HL subjects at grades 6, 5, 4 including a Science at minimum grade 5.
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
Scottish FA Mental Health Award AND the Scottish FA Children’s Wellbeing Coaching Award.
T Level
- Grade M
- T Level must be completed in a Science subject or A Level Science may be required. Please contact ugadmissions@napier.ac.uk to check if you meet the subject specific requirements.
Minimum Year 2
HNC
- Pass in a related subject* with A in Graded Unit at Level 7 *Sports Coaching with Development of Sport, Sports Coaching and Development
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
UEFA C Licence (or equivalent, such as the Scottish FA C Licence)
Minimum Year 3
HND
- Pass in a related subject* with A in Graded Unit at Level 8 *Sports Coaching with Development of Sport, Sports Coaching and Development
In addition to the above academic requirements you require the following football specific awards prior to course commencement;
UEFA B Licence
If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply.
