International Business Management & Language BA (Hons)

This degree helps you stand out from others with business degrees, as it teaches you to apply an international perspective


If you're planning on a career in international business, you'll need a combination of general business skills and specialised knowledge of the global market place – and that's exactly what this course offers, with the added opportunity to develop your language and intercultural communication skills.

You'll study your chosen language (from French, German or Spanish) to degree level, with a focus on communication and practical language skills such as negotiation and report-writing.

In addition you'll gain a strong foundation in a wide range of business and management disciplines, together with skills and experience that will enable you to meet the challenges of a career in the fast-changing world of international business.

Course details

Your language study, and study of the international business environment and its particular needs, will be reinforced by a compulsory year abroad, when you'll have the chance to immerse yourself in the culture of the country of your choice and hone your language skills.

You may also have the opportunity to develop employability skills specific to companies with international economic activities, and / or to obtain a double degree at one of our partner universities: Aachen, Osnabrueck, Brest and Lyon.

You'll accelerate your rate of learning and have the opportunity to become familiar with the way business is conducted in that country - a valuable asset for anyone involved in international trade.

Alongside your chosen language, you'll acquire all the knowledge and skills to equip you for a broad range of careers in business at home and abroad. The research skills training included in the programme mean that you can also progress to further study.

In our language classes small group sessions and experienced teaching staff make for an intensive but enjoyable learning experience.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements indicate both Standard and Minimum qualifications with which we normally accept students. Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications.

It is important that applicants have some experience in the language they wish to study as part of the programme, however, it may be possible to study German from beginner’s level.

Minimum year 1

SQA Higher

Standard Entry Requirement

BBBC to include grade B in a language.

National 5 grade C in English.

National 5 Maths recommended.

Minimum Offer Entry Requirement

BCCC to include grade B in a language.

National 5 grade C in English.

National 5 Maths recommended.

A Level

CCC to include a language.

GCSE grade C/4 in English.

GCSE Maths recommended.

Irish Leaving Certificate

Pre-2017 Grading System:

B1, B3, B3, B3 at Higher Level to include a language and grade C2 in Ordinary Level English. OL Maths recommended.

New Grading System:

H2, H3, H3, H3 at Higher Level to include a language and grade O4 in Ordinary Level English. OL Maths recommended.

BTEC (QCF) Extended Diploma Level 3

Minimum grades MMM (Merit, Merit, Merit).

A Level grade C in a language.

GCSE grade C/4 in English.

GCSE Maths recommended.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Award of Diploma with 27 points overall with three HL subjects at grades 6, 5, 4 to include grade 5 in a language.

Grade 4 in SL English.

SL Maths recommended.

European Baccalaureate

Pass at 70% or above with grade 7 in three subjects to include a language.

Grade 6 in English.

Maths recommended.

Scottish HNC

Other HNC subjects may be considered for year 1 entry where a B in the graded unit is achieved.

To include SQA Higher grade B in a language. The language qualification must be completed within the past 2 years. 

English language requirements

If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply.

This may not apply if you have completed all your school qualifications in English. Check our country pages to find out if this applies to you.

Fees & funding

The course fees you'll pay and the funding available to you will depend on a number of factors including your nationality, location, personal circumstances and the course you are studying. We also have a number of bursaries and scholarships available to our students.

Students from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be invoiced the tuition fees for 3 years of their 4 years of study. Please note that the tuition fee status of EU nationals commencing their studies in 2021/2 has yet to be confirmed by the Scottish Government following the UK's withdrawal from the European Union and will be published once known. For EU students commencing their studies in 2020/21 fees will remain the same as Scottish Students.

Please note tuition fees are subject to an annual review and may increase from one year to the next.
