Electrical & Electronic Engineering is a fascinating field, and one which could make your time at university a challenging, enriching and rewarding experience.

Electrical & Electronic Engineering is something that touches all aspects of our lives and is something we simply couldn't do without. If you like the idea of creating electrical and electronic systems which could help millions of people on a day to day basis, like the systems used in phones, computers or the generation and distribution of electrical supply systems, then a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering is for you.

This course balances the study of electronic and electrical engineering and focuses on the application of these skills to real-world engineering situations. Study is broad enough to allow entry to a variety of career paths in all areas of electronic and electrical engineering. Additionally, students can progress to postgraduate research in this or a related field.

Course details

In year one the course focuses on learning engineering principles and practices, as well as computing skills and principles of design, relating to a wide range of engineering disciplines.

You will then further develop your knowledge in the principles of the field and engineering management. You will implement practical solutions across a range of applied applications and develop your skills in lateral problem solving and innovative thinking.

In your final year you will work on your honours project as well as gaining enhanced skills in areas of analogue electronics, embedded systems and electrical machines and power systems.

Entry requirements

What are the entry requirements for Electrical and Electronic Engineering?

Our entry requirements indicate both Standard and Minimum qualifications with which we normally accept students. Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications.

Can you go straight into second year of university?

Advanced entry into Year 2, Year 3 or Year 4 of this course is possible for students with suitable qualifications. See the individual year tabs for more information.

SQA Higher

  • Standard Entry Requirement: BBBB including Maths (Higher Applications of Maths not accepted) and a Science (excluding Biology) or Technical Subject*

  • Minimum Entry Requirement: BCCC including Maths (Higher Applications of Maths not accepted) and a Science (excluding Biology) or Technical Subject*

  • MMM (Merit, Merit, Merit) in a related subject
    BTEC must include Maths or A level Maths must have also been achieved at grade C.

 

BTEC National Diploma (Level 3) plus A Level

  • MM (Merit, Merit) in a related subject plus A Level Grade C
    BTEC must include Maths or A level Maths must have also been achieved at grade C.
     

International Baccalaureate Diploma

  • Award of Diploma with 28 points overall with three Higher Level subjects at grades 6, 5, 4 including a Science (excluding Biology) or Technical Subject* at minimum grade 5.
    Standard Level Maths at grade 5 is also required.

 

T level

  • Pass

HNC

  • Pass HNC in Engineering Systems, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering with grade B in the Graded Unit.
    Must include passes in the modules Engineering Maths 1, 2 and 3.

Minimum Year 3

HND

  • Pass HND in Engineering Systems, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics with grade B in all SCQF Level 8 Graded Units.
    Must include passes in the modules Engineering Maths 1, 2, 3 and 4.
 

Minimum Year 4

Irish Ordinary Degree

  • Pass in a relevant subject with 50% overall, with a minimum of 50% at first sitting in all final year subjects.

If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply.

Fees & funding

The course fees you'll pay and the funding available to you will depend on a number of factors including your nationality, location, personal circumstances and the course you are studying. We also have a number of bursaries and scholarships available to our students.

Students from England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Republic of Ireland will be invoiced the tuition fees for 3 years of their 4 years of study.
