Overview

Electrical & Electronic Engineering is a fascinating field, and one which could make your time at university a challenging, enriching and rewarding experience.

It is something that touches all aspects of our lives and we simply couldn't do without. If you like the idea of creating electrical and electronic systems which could help millions of people on a day to day basis, like the systems used in phones, computers or the generation and distribution of electrical supply systems, then a degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering is for you.

This course balances the study of electronic and electrical engineering and focuses on the application of these skills to real-world engineering situations. Study is broad enough to allow entry to a wide variety of career paths in all areas of electronic and electrical engineering or as an engineer working within other types of organisations.

Course details

In year one you will develop knowledge in the principles of the field and engineering management.

During years two and three you will implement practical solutions across a range of applied applications and develop your skills in lateral problem solving and innovative thinking.

In your final year you will work on your honours project as well as gaining enhanced skills in areas of analogue electronics, embedded systems and electrical machines and power systems.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements indicate the minimum qualifications with which we normally accept students. Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications.

Please note there is no year 1 entry for part-time to this course.

Advanced entry

Advanced entry into Year 2, Year 3 or Year 4 is possible for students with suitable qualifications.

Minimum Year 2

SQA Advanced Higher

BBC including Maths and Science (Excluding Biology) or Technical Subject*

National 5 Grade C in English.

A Level

CCC including Maths and Science (Excluding Biology) or Technical Subject*

GCSE Grade C/4 in English.

BTEC Extended Diploma

DDD (Distinction, Distinction,Distinction) in a related subject. BTEC must include Maths/A Level Grade B in Maths

GCSE Grade C/4 in English. 

HNC

Pass HNC in a relevant subject with Grade B in the graded unit

Must include Engineering Maths 1, 2 and 3.

Technical subjects accepted

*Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Engineering, Mathematics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Technological Studies/Engineering Science, Design & Manufacture, Chemistry.

Minimum Year 3

HND

Pass HND in a relevant subject with Grade B at SCQF Level 8 in all graded units

Must include Engineering Maths 1, 2, 3 and 4.

DUT

Pass DUT in a relevant subject with overall grade 12 to include grade 11 in English in final year of studies.

English language requirements

If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply.

This may not apply if you have completed all your school qualifications in English. Check our country pages to find out if this applies to you.
