    What is University Clearing?

UCAS Clearing (Clearing) is a UK university process when universities match applicants without a confirmed university place to available undergraduate courses after the main admissions cycle ends. Universities list these available course places on their website from early July and for most programmes you can apply until September of that year.

Apply for a Course in Clearing

A successful Clearing application is possible with a little strategic thinking and some advance research on the process. It’s very similar to a regular UCAS application, just in a sped-up timeline. Even if you are waiting for exam results, you can do research in advance by exploring our different subject areas.

What are the key UCAS Clearing dates for 2026?

The following are the five key UCAS Clearing dates for 2026:

2 July 2026: UCAS Clearing officially opens. Courses start appearing on the UCAS website from this date. Applicants can begin contacting universities with vacancies.

Tuesday 4 August 2026: Qualifications Scotland Results Day. Higher results are released for Scottish students who have sat exams this year. Scottish institutions may enter their peak Clearing period here. Phone lines at universities will usually be busy before 9 AM so call as early as you can.

Thursday 13 August 2026: A-Level Results Day in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This is the UK high point of Clearing activity – if you have new A-level results call us when you receive your grades.

Early September: Clearing starts to close. Universities begin setting internal cut-offs for course acceptance. Some high-demand courses start disappearing from Clearing lists earlier in summer, and the remainder are likely to close late August.

7 September 2026: Edinburgh Napier University Trimester 1 begins and runs through until December. We will usually not accept new Clearing applications after term has started.

How to Prepare for Results Day

If you plan to apply in Clearing on results day, put the date in your diary, and you can use this as a deadline to have done all your research and find Edinburgh Napier University courses you might be interested in.

Successful Clearing applicants prepare before Results Day by completing key tasks between July and August. If you plan to apply through Clearing, mark your results day and use our timeline to get ready.
