The Mobile Attacks Under Internet of Things Networks
Since the introduction of the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), its security aspects have been the focus of the scientific community who reported several security flaws that left the protocol vulnerable for several attacks. In this paper, the aim is to demonstrate how the network performance might be affected under mobile attacker, a scenario that has not been investigated before, and to evaluate the effectiveness of a simple mitigation technique to combat the DIS attack. The results show that a mobile attacker increases the negative effect on the IoT network in comparison to the stationary attacker under both DIS and Rank Decreased attacks. The countermeasure reduced the effectiveness of the stationary DIS attack by 40%, and reduced the mobile DIS attacks by an average of 52%. Further research could be conducted by employing different mobility models, topologies, and attacks to help fully understand the impact of mobility of other well-known attacks.
