1.1. The “Destination Edinburgh Scholarship” Competition (“Competition”) is conducted by Edinburgh Napier University.
1.2. Information on how to enter and the prizes form part of these Terms and Conditions of Entry (“Terms and Conditions”).
1.3. By submitting a completed “Destination Edinburgh Scholarship” official entry form, the “Entrants” accepts the Terms and Conditions.
1.4. The Competition commences at 12:01am GMT on 6 March 2017 and is open to all US Citizens. Entries close at 11.59pm GMT on 30 March 2017 (“Closing Date”). Entrants will need to determine the local start and close dates and times based on the time zone in their location.
2. The Prizes
2.1. Entry into the competition gives Entrants that comply with the eligibility criteria set out in clause 4 the chance to win the following prizes:
(a) One full University Scholarship covering the cost of tuition (The Winner).
(b) Three Partial University Scholarships to the maximum value of £2000 (the Runners Up).
The prize includes tuition fees and reasonable costs associated with agreed experiences undertaken as the University’s USA International Brand Ambassador only. All other costs and expenses incurred by the Winner and Runner Up in accepting the prizes offered are excluded, including, but not limited to, travel, accommodation, Tier 4 student visa costs, travel insurance, overseas student health cover, public liability insurance, cover for dental and allied health expenses, excess baggage, meals, taxes, ancillary costs, tours, ground transportation, airport transfers in home country, room service, spending money, costs for text books or other study materials or any other costs of a personal nature.
3. Conditions on the Prizes
3.1 Conditions for the Winner and the Runners Up
(a) The University reserves the right to revise any element of the prizes, including how many prizes are provided.
(b) The Winners and the Runners Up must commence studies in September 2017.
(c) The Winner and Runners Up must meet UK visa requirements. The Winner and Runners Up will need to determine their own eligibility to meet the UK visa requirements.
(d) The Winner and Runners Up must meet course entry requirements and must determine their own eligibility to meet the entry requirements of the course they will apply for.
(e) The prizes exclude Tier 4 student visa costs, travel insurance, overseas student health cover, public liability insurance, cover for dental and allied health expenses, excess baggage, meals, taxes, ancillary costs, tours, ground transportation, airport transfers in home country, room service, spending money, costs for text books or other study materials or any other costs of a personal nature.
(f) For the avoidance of doubt, the prize for the Winner does not include accommodation or costs for accommodation.
(g) Travel and experiences during the time of your stay and associated with the prizes are subject to availability and reasonable costs.
(h) The Winner and Runners Up will arrange their own flights and travel arrangements - the cost of travel is not included in the prize.
(i) The University is not responsible for any change in the value of any prize occurring between the publishing date and date the prize is claimed.
(j) Prizes are not transferable or exchangeable, and cannot be taken as cash.
(k) All courses undertaken by The Winner and Runners Up must commence studies in September 2017.
4.1 Entry to the Competition is open to persons aged eighteen years old and over as at 1 February 2017.
5. How to enter
4.2 Each Entrant must be a citizen and permanent resident of The United States of America.
4.3 Each Entrant must possess a current passport, be able to meet the legislative requirements of a UK visa and be available to visit and remain in the UK during the period from September 2017 until September 2018 if chosen as a Winner and Runner Up. Each Entrant will need to determine their own eligibility to meet UK visa requirements.
4.4 An Entrant must not have been convicted of any criminal offence in any country and must not have had a visa rejected or have been deported from the UK or any other country.
4.5 Each Entrant authorises the University to conduct any civil, criminal, financial and other background or reference checks considered necessary or desirable by the University.
4.6 Directors, management, employees and contractors of Edinburgh Napier University and those of any agencies and suppliers associated with the Competition are ineligible to enter.
4.7 Each Entrant is responsible for complying with applicable laws and regulations in its Participating Country, including but not limited to, obtaining consents from parents/guardians to participate in the Competition.
4.8 Each Entrant must meet the academic qualification requirements to study their chosen MSc course. Entrants are subject to the same requirements and regulations as any other applicant applying to study at the University. View requirements for:
5.1 To enter and be eligible to be a The Winner or Runners Up in the Competition, Each Entrant must, before the Closing Date:
(a) Complete the online application form (http://www.napier.ac.uk/courses/browse-interests/tourism/destination-edinburgh/application-form) stating his/her full name as set out in his/her passport; and
(b) Create a 90 seconds (maximum) video and provide a YouTube link to their entry (“Video”) on What makes Edinburgh a successful tourism destination (“Entry”).
5.2 By submitting an Entry each Entrant agrees to comply with these terms and conditions.
5.3 As part of an Entry, a valid Video must:
(a) be in English;
(b) not be longer than 90 seconds;
(c) be received by the Closing Date. Any Entry received after that date for any reason including that the entry was lost, delayed, misdirected or is unable to be viewed for any reason may not be accepted in the absolute discretion of the university. No responsibility is accepted for late, lost, delayed or misdirected Entries or for Entries that are unable to be viewed for any reason;
(d) not contain any overt company or product branding (including URLs or telephone numbers) even with permission of that organisation;
(e) not be unlawful or fraudulent, or such that the university may deem (at its sole discretion) in breach of any intellectual property, privacy, publicity or other rights;
(f) not be defamatory, misrepresents or contains disparaging remarks about other people or companies,
(g) not contain any personal identification such as license plate numbers, email addresses or street addresses;
(h) not be obscene, pornographic, profane, insulting, sexually inappropriate, violent, abusive, harassing, threatening, extortionate, contrary to moral decency, objectionable or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group;
(i) not include nudity, profanity or obscenity, or be otherwise unsuitable for publication;
(j) not promote illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons or any activity that may appear unsafe or dangerous or promotes any particular political agenda or message; hunting or gambling, cruelty to animals or humans or the irresponsible use of alcohol;
(k) be able to be viewed without technical issues;
5.4 The application form must contain the Entrant’s contact details which must remain correct and kept up to date through the competition website. If not, the university may award the prize to another Entrant.
5.5 Each individual may only submit one Entry.
6.1 For the purposes of selecting a short list of Entries and for selecting the Winner and the Runners Up, Entrants’ videos, profiles and application forms will be judged by the University’s nominated representatives (“Judges”), based on the Entrants who, in the Judges’ sole discretion, demonstrate will most benefit from the scholarship prize.
6.2 The Judges’ decision on a shortlist of Entries (“Shortlist”) will be made and announced on 13 April 2017. The Judges’ decision on the Shortlist is in the Judges’ sole discretion and is final. The Shortlist will be made publicly available on the Competition website page and via Facebook. The number of Entries in the Shortlist is at the discretion of the University. Shortlisted Entrants will have 72 hours to confirm their continued participation once notified via email by the University. An email will be deemed to be received by an Entrant immediately after the email was sent (“Deemed Receipt”). It is the responsibility of each Entrant to ensure that they check their emails regularly and advise the university of any changes to their email address. If an Entrant on the Shortlist does not respond within 72 hours of Deemed Receipt then the university reserves its rights to offer the place to another Entrant or to not offer a place to another Entrant at all.
6.3 The Shortlisted Entrants may be contacted for an interview. Interviews will be conducted in English via Skype or other web conferencing or video interviewing software. It is the responsibility of each Entrant to ensure they are available to attend the interview.
6.4 The Winners will be announced on 26 April 2017. The Judges’ decision on the Winner and the Runners Up of the Competition is in the Judges’ sole discretion and is final. No further correspondence will be entered into.
6.5 The university may notify Entrants if their Entry is invalid or rejected because it does not comply with these Terms, but it is under no obligation to do so.
6.6 The Winner and the Runners Up will be notified by email within three (3) business days of the Prizes being announced. The names of the Winner and the Runners Up will be published on the Edinburgh Napier University website (www.napier.ac.uk) and the Competition website (www.napier.ac.uk/destinationedinburgh). An email will be deemed to be received by Winner and the Runners Up immediately after the email was sent (“Deemed Receipt”). It is the responsibility of each Winner and the Runners Up to ensure that they check their emails regularly and advise the University of any changes to their email address. If a Winner and the Runners Up does not respond within 72 hours of Deemed Receipt then the University reserves its rights to offer the prize to another Entrant or to not offer a prize to another Entrant at all.
7. Obligations of Winner and the Runners Up
7.1 The Winner and the Runners Up must apply for, pay for and be granted a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK if required.
7.2 The Winner and the Runners Up are expected to attend any courses required in accordance with these terms and conditions and are responsible for all costs and expenses associated with the courses, other than as set out in Schedule A. The Winner and the Runners Up also need to submit their coursework on time and successfully pass all aspects of the programme.
7.3 The Winner and the Runners Up must be of good moral character and:
(a) not be under the influence of any medication, drugs or other substances which may impair their ability to undertake the study and related activities;
(b) comply with these Terms and Conditions; and
(c) not publish any material which is disparaging of the university.
7.4 Any inappropriate, illegal or other behaviour which in the university’s opinion is immoral or illegal on the part of a Winner or Runner Up may result in the cancellation of the prize, either before or during the Competition period. The Winner and the Runners Up acknowledge and agree that the cancellation of any prize may result in the Winner and the Runners Up visa being cancelled and the Winner and the Runners Up being required to return to their home country. The Winner and the Runners Up acknowledge and agree that if any part of the prize is cancelled, the university is not responsible for any associated costs and is not liable to pay to the Winner and the Runners Up any value of the prizes not used or any other expenses incurred by the applicant.
7.5 The Winner and the Runners Up must provide any documentation and complete any forms as required by the Prize sponsors.
7.6 The Winner is expected to Blog on his/her experiences in Scotland through relevant social media, websites and other channels or as advised by the university. The Winner and the Runners Up are expected to make themselves available to be photographed or filmed from time to time (at the university’s sole discretion) or as advised by the university and/or to submit regular video diaries. The Winner is expected to attend promotional events as invited by the University in the voluntary role as a university international brand ambassador. The Winner acknowledges that the Blogs may be edited by the university at its sole discretion and the Blogs must not contain any content that:
(a) is unlawful or fraudulent or in breach of any intellectual property, privacy or other right or is defamatory and represents or contains disparaging remarks about other people or companies or contains any personal identification for anyone who has not given written authority for disclosure on the Blogs;
(b) is obscene, pornographic, profane, insulting, sexually inappropriate, violent, abusive, harassing, threatening, extortionate, contrary to moral decency, objectionable or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group or includes nudity, profanity or obscenity or is otherwise unsuitable for publication;
(c) promotes illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms, gambling or weapons or the use of any of these or promotes any activity which may appear unsafe or dangerous;
(d) promotes the irresponsible use of alcohol;
(e) promotes any particular political agenda or message; or
(f) contains any company or product branding other than as authorised by the university, and the Winner and the Runners Up must remove any content which breaches these conditions immediately upon request from the university.
7.8 Blogging must be in English and may include reports, diaries, video diaries, blogs, photos, social media posts and other online communications (“Blogs”). The posts should concern a range of topics that reflect a balanced view of the Winners’ academic, social and work experience in Edinburgh. Each communication should be at least 50 words and include photos or videos of the experiences.
8. Entrants consents and warranties
8.1 By submitting the Entry, each Entrant warrants to the University that the Entrant is the sole owner of all intellectual property rights (including copyright) in any photo, video, Blog, voice, image and any information contained in the Entry or subsequently provided by the Entrant (in any medium) including the Entrant’s name, signature and other personal or identifying details or information (“Entrant Information”) and each Entrant grants the university a royalty-free, world-wide, non-exclusive, transferrable, irrevocable, perpetual licence (including the right to sub-licence) to use, exploit and otherwise exercise all such intellectual property rights (including to reproduce and publish) for any purpose connected with the Competition or similar competitions and promotions or for such other future promotional activities as the university deems fit.
8.2 Each Entrant consents to the university using the Entrant’s image, photo, video, name, voice and any other Entrant Information for any purpose connected with the Competition or similar competitions and promotions or for such other future promotional materials as the university deems fit.
8.3 The Winner and the Runners Up consent to being filmed and photographed as set out in these terms and conditions.
8.4 Each Entrant acknowledges and agrees that the university may in its sole discretion provide any material or information (including Entrant Information) created or concerning the Entrant to the university’s Marketing & Communications department, the sponsors of the Competition or other agencies for its use in the above mentioned promotional purposes. Each Entrant accepts that media may contact the Entrant to discuss the Entry and each Entrant agrees to participate fully with the media as requested by the university. Each Entrant acknowledges and agrees that the university may use, or not use, any photo, video or any information (including Entrant Information) in the Entry, and in the case of the Winner and the Runners Up, any information, images, videos or blog content, at its sole discretion.
8.5 Each Entrant, and where applicable the Winner and the Runners Up, acknowledge and agree that:
(b) if the Entrant wins a prize, the Entrant consents to the university publishing their name and other personal details (including Entrant Information) in connection with the Competition in current or future promotional materials and using this information as authorised under these terms and conditions.
(c) by submitting any photo, video and blog, each Entrant warrants that all recognisable persons in the video consent to the university or its agents publishing their images for use in the Competition and for current or future promotional purposes. The Entrant must be able to provide proof of such consent if requested.
(d) each Entrant warrants that any photo, video and Blog is original, has not been submitted for any other competition and is not based on the work of any other person.
8.6 Each Entrant acknowledges and agrees that the Winner and Runners Up are responsible for arranging and paying for any accommodation and any other costs / expenses as detailed in 3.1 above.
8.7 Each Entrant warrants and represents that it has disclosed to the university any physical or mental impediment that they believe may prevent them from performing any activities required or expected of the Entrant as part of these terms and conditions, the competition, any prize or any ancillary activities.
9.1 Compliance with any lawful requirements is the responsibility of the Winner and the Runners Up.
9.2 The Winner and the Runners Up acknowledge and agree that the university is not responsible for any refusal or cancellation of a visa and that if the Winner and the Runners Up breach a term of their visa and are required to return to their home country that the university is not responsible for any associated costs and is not liable to pay to the Winner and the Runners Up any value of the prizes not used.
9.3 If this Competition is compromised in any way or is not capable of being conducted as reasonably anticipated due to any reason beyond the control of the university, the university reserves the right in its sole discretion to modify, suspend, terminate or cancel the Competition.
9.4 To the full extent permitted by law, the university is not liable for (and each Entrant hereby releases and holds the university harmless in respect of) any injury, damages, expenses, costs, liabilities or loss whatsoever (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) to persons or property by reason of any act or omission, deliberate or negligent, by the university, or its officers and agents in connection with participation in the Competition or the arrangements for supply, or the supply, of any prizes to the Winner and the Runners Up of the Competition.
9.5 The university reserves the right to amend the Terms and Conditions at any time until the Closing Date. Any amendments will be notified on the competition website.
9.6 To the full extent permitted by law, no person is entitled to claim compensation or loss from the university for any matter arising out of the Competition, including but not limited to a failure by the university to comply with the Terms and Conditions.
9.7 The university’s decision in relation to any aspect of the Competition is final and binding on every person who enters.
9.8 The university reserves the right to accept or reject any Entry at its sole discretion.
9.9 The Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of Scotland.
9.10 These Terms and Conditions have been prepared in English.
9.11 Each Entrant acknowledges and agrees that all media interviews in relation to the Competition or volunteer arrangements require the prior approval of the university and the university reserves the right to edit any media interviews at its sole discretion.
9.12 If you are successful in winning the scholarship, you will not be eligible to borrow money for your tuition fees through US loans - your tuition fees will be exempt from your Cost of Attendance. You must inform the US loans team of any scholarships you are in receipt of.
9.13 Each Entrant acknowledges and agrees that in these Terms and Conditions:
(a) words in the singular include the plural and vice versa; and
(b) if a word or phrase is defined its other grammatical forms have corresponding meanings.
9.15 The scholarship winner and runners up will be held liable for the following fees if they leave their MSc programme before full completion:
- Withdrawal in the first 4 weeks – no fee due;
- Withdrawal after 4 weeks of study 25% fees due;
- Withdrawal after 10 weeks of study 50% fees due;
- Withdrawal after 4 weeks of Second Semester 100% of fees due.
Winners Prizes international tuition fees to cover the cost of one year’s MSc study at Edinburgh Napier University for a Tourism masters degree.
Participating MSc programmes are limited to:
